Welcome

Welcome to the third blast of Art Week Exeter (AWE). It’s been an interesting year and not just in the art world: we’re certainly seeing it reflected in the work on show in 2018’s festival.

Robin Doyle’s impressive We Built This City has been hands-on with diverse communities around the city to create a spectacle with a strong social message and we’re excited to see it hosted in the heart of the city’s most loved building.
Dr Jean Wainwright has curated a show of internationally respected artists on the theme of borders and identity, finding historical similarities to our current situation with Another Spring.

Beyond reflecting the present, we are looking to the future with a bountiful crop of emerging talent: Exeter School of Art is hitting its stride and has a glorious array of student work to enjoy in different parts of the city.

We’re also privileged to support a number of exhibitions by CEDA, which is celebrating 30 years of commissioning and developing work with disabled artists this year.

We have some super-diverse group shows, by intention or happy accident, whether you catch the hive of activity that is Studio 36, dive underground at Roman Gate or scale the lofty heights of TOPOS – you’re going to find a trove of engaging and vibrant work.

We’re also feeding your minds with our best-ever programme of talks and workshops. Join us for discussion events with some high-profile talent, from Jem Finer talking about his 1000-year-long composition Longplayer, to kennardphillipps examining the relationship between cultural production and contemporary politics. We also have a curator’s talk and gallery tour from Dr Jean Wainwright and an exhibition introduction by Peter Randall-Page RA Elect. Dr Tristram Hunt, V&A Director, will be speaking about Brexit, Netflix and AI…

You can also get your hands dirty: Double Elephant Print Workshop is running workshops for all ages and shapes; you can make zines with We Are Fans; protest posters with Inky Fingers, and Art and Energy will help you build your own solar-powered phone charger – ready for summer!

There’s lots more than we can fit here – in fact there’s a whole programme hiding behind this ramble – so grab an extra copy for a friend, jump in and we’ll see you on the bright side!

PS: join us on social media! We’re @Art WeekExeter in all the usual places, with the hashtag #AWExeter.
